Constrained Least Square Design of FIR Filters Without Speci ed Transition Bands

چکیده
This paper puts forth the notion that explicitly speciied transition bands have been introduced in the lter design literature in part as an indirect approach for dealing with discontinu-ities in the desired frequency response. We suggest that the use of explicitly speciied transition bands is sometimes inappropriate because, to satisfy a meaningful optimality criterion, their use implicitly assumes a possibly unrealistic assumption on the class of input signals. This paper also presents an algorithm for the design of peak constrained lowpass FIR lters according to an integral square error criterion that does not require the use of speciied transition bands. This rapidly converging, robust, simple multiple exchange algorithm uses Lagrange multipliers and the Kuhn-Tucker conditions on each iteration. The algorithm will design linear and minimum phase FIR lters and gives the best L 2 lter and a continuum of Chebyshev lters as special cases. It is distinct from many other lter design methods because it does not exclude from the integral square error a region around the cut-oo frequency, and yet, it overcomes Gibbs' phenomenon without resorting to windowing or`smoothing out' the discontinuity of the ideal lowpass lter. 7 The trade-oo curve for integral square error and peak size error: jjEjj 2 2 versus s. Constrained least square design of FIR filters without specified transition bands
We consider the design of digital lters and discuss the inclusion of explicitly speciied transition bands in the frequency domain design of FIR lters. We put forth the notion that explicitly speciied transition bands have been introduced in the lter design literature as an indirect and often inadequate approach for dealing with discontinuities in the desired frequency response. We also present ...
متن کاملA modified algorithm for constrained least square design of multiband FIR filters without specified transition bands
In a previous paper, we described a constrained least square approach to FIR filter design that does not use “don’t care” regions. In that paper, we described a simple algorithm for the design of lowpass filters according to that approach. In this correspondence, we describe a modification of that algorithm that makes it converge for many multiband filter designs. Although no proof of convergen...
متن کاملA weighted least square algorithm for low-delay FIR filters with piecewise variable stopbands
Variable digital filters are useful for various signal processing and communication applications where the frequency characteristics, such as fractional delays and cutoff frequencies, can be varied. In this paper, we propose a design method of variable FIR digital filters with an approximate linear phase characteristic in the passband. The proposed variable FIR filters have some large attenuati...
متن کاملDesign and Properties of Two-channel Fir Filter Banks Optimized by Using Peak-constrained Least Squares Optimization Criterion
This paper considers the design and properties of two-channel alias-free finite-impulse response (FIR) filter banks where the analysis filters are optimized by using the peak-constrained least squares (PCLS) optimization criterion. All the alias-free twochannel filter banks proposed in the literature are under consideration. For the proposed PCLS designs, the maximum of the stopband energies of...
متن کاملDesign of Computationally Efficient FIR Filters Using Periodic Subfilters as Building Blocks
For many digital signal processing applications, FIR filters are preferred over their IIR counterparts as the former can be designed with exactly linear phase and they are free of stability problems and limit cycle oscillations. The major drawback of FIR filters is that they require, especially in applications demanding narrow transition bands, considerably more arithmetic operations and hardwa...
